ECOLOGICAL HANDMADE PAPERS FROM NEPAL AND JAPAN

The handmade lokta paper is a unique product from Nepal, whose manufacture the Nepali learnt from the Chinese over a thousand years ago. Still today the paper is produced observing the same old traditions.

'LOKTA' (lat. Daphne Cannabina or Daphne Papyrucae) is the Nepali name for a bush that grows on the slopes of the Himalaya Mountains at an altitude of about 2000-4000 metres. The inner part of the bark of this bush, i.e. the phloem, is used as the raw material of the Nepali paper.

The handmade paper made from Lokta fibres is strong and durable. Each sheet is unique. The paper's texture varies according to its thickness. Hundreds of different kinds of papers can be created by using different processes in the production of paper pulp and by varying the thickness and colour.

Lokta paper is ecological and its production does not harm Nepal’s delicate environment. The employees of the business, that works in collaboration with Lalupate Ltd., receive a good salary for their work, which encourages them to make high-quality products. The excellent Lokta paper can be used for many purposes. Due to the fact that it is made from clean fibres, the paper can also be used for pressing, copying and printing. The paper is acid-free and therefore ideal for art purposes.

Japan’s handmade washi papers and hand printed Chiyogami and Katazome-shi papers are of extreme high quality. Lalupate Ltd. offers a wide variety of Japanese papers, which are suitable for bookbinding, graphics, conservation, card making and art works. The production by hand of high-quality washi paper is slowly declining in Japan. Lalupate Ltd. wants to help to maintain this precious art and, for that reason, wants to market these uniquely excellent papers by making them known to potential customers.

Egyptian papyrus sheets, made by hand from genuine papyrus reeds from Nile, are also part of Lalupate Ltd.'s product range. Acid-free light and dark papyrus sheets are available in many different sizes.

Our total range of products includes more than 500 different papers - from the size of business cards to large sheets of a few metres.
